Medical Education

Hull York Medical School

The surgery is invested in training future generations of healthcare professionals, as well as supporting the development of our own staff.

Which health professionals do you train?

Each year we host two Hull York Medical School 4th year student doctors. They spend 30 weeks of the year in surgery, learning medicine from the perspective of primary care. They have the opportunity to run their own supervised surgeries and spend time shadowing the multi-disciplinary team, alongside some essential hospital rotations.

We are an established GP training practice, hosting Harrogate GP trainees for 6-12 month placements. A GP Registrar is a qualified doctor who has decided to specialise in primary care. Dr Longstaff and Dr Rummens oversee their training and Dr Longstaff also works as one of the Training Programme Directors of the Harrogate GP Training Scheme.

We host student nurses from Teeside and York Universities.

Education is a mutually beneficial process. Having trainees in the surgery helps to secure the future workforce, provides more appointments and enhances knowledge. Thank you for welcoming our trainees.

What training do you offer to staff?

All new staff undertake a detailed induction program. All staff complete annual Basic Life Support Training and online Mandatory Training covering essential subjects. The surgery closes approximately 3-4 afternoons per year for all staff to be able to attend training provided by the Heartbeat Alliance on essential subjects such as Safeguarding. Cover is provided by the out of hours service.

Every 6 months we hold a whole staff training event in Thirsk Library, when we welcome external speakers, discuss Learning Events and practice emergency drills. We are committed to the learning and development of staff individually within their roles.
